How to Get a Six Sigma Black Belt

Assuming you have completed previous levels of Six Sigma certification, you can follow the steps below to earn your black belt:

1. Get a Green Belt in Six Sigma

If you have not earned a Six Sigma green belt, you must complete this level of certification before you are eligible for a black belt certification. Many Six Sigma certification institutions may also offer green belt graduate courses to help prepare candidates for coursework as part of their black belt certification training. Since the concept of a black belt is directly related to green belt applications, it is important to obtain these credentials prior to taking the Six Sigma Master Black Belt Certification exam.

2. Pass certification training for a black belt

Although not a requirement, studying as a Six Sigma Black Belt through a corporate program, a Six Sigma Instructor, or an accredited institution can help you prepare for the exam. Training courses are typically based on Green Belt level concepts, including advanced applications in DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control) methodologies, Enterprise Integration and Deployment, Team Leadership and Management, Project Management, Data Analysis, Business Performance Metrics, and Financial Measures.

3. Complete and submit the Six Sigma project requirement.

Most testing centers and certifying organizations require you to complete and submit a project using the appropriate tools within Six Sigma methodologies. A Six Sigma project often demonstrates quality improvement models that reflect real-world performance and performance to optimize and improve processes in the service and manufacturing industries. Six Sigma projects may cover applications in product quality analysis, human resources, manufacturing operations, and financial performance.

4. Pass the certification exam

The International Association for Six Sigma Certification (IASSC) offers every level of Six Sigma certification, including the black belt level. Depending on the certifying institution through which you are taking the exam, you may be able to take practice tests to assess your ability prior to the actual exam. Many institutes also offer a certification exam as an open assessment, so be sure to check with the organization to understand the specific exam requirements you must meet.

5. Apply for Black Belt Certification

When you pass the certification exam, you will become a Certified Six Sigma Black Belt (CSSBB). This certificate demonstrates your advanced knowledge of project management and analysis methods in accordance with the Six Sigma program and can prepare you to advance your knowledge to the master’s level. After completing your black belt certification, you can take advantage of leadership development, mentorship opportunities, and professional development to expand your experience in Six Sigma applications.

6. Grow your career

Earning a six sigma master black belt is a prestigious achievement often sought after by many six sigma experts. After you gain additional experience with black belt applications in the workplace, you can take a black belt training course to gain the highest level of knowledge. With a Master Black Belt, you can further increase your career prospects, income potential, and advancement opportunities.
